Gregorio Trentin

(attr. 1830 ca.)

Prominent among the piano makers in Italy in the first decades of the 19th century was Gregorio Trentin (1768-1847?).

Born in 1768 in Conselve in the province of Padua, after receiving the “sacerdotal insignia”, he devoted himself to the construction of musical instruments. The small grand piano, with its Empire-style cabinet, is attributed to Gregorio Trentin.

The instrument bears the inscription inside the soundboard:

Padova li 18 giugno 1842 / Gregorio Trentin
fabbricatore di pianoforti /
(and below)  Nicola Lachin

This piano (datable to around 1820-1830) was reduced in 1842 by Trentin with the help of Lachin, his most famous pupil, from the original 220 centimetres to the current 162.
