Luigi Hoffer

Luigi Hoffer Venezia
Fabbricatore di Piano Forti
ca. 1820

Luigi Hoffer worked in Venice between the end of the 18th century and the first decades of the 19th century, initially with his brother Giorgio. His first works are signed Ludwig Hoffer, clearly testifying to his transalpine origins. Worthy of note is the damper system with which this table-top example is equipped, conventionally defined as “Italian-style”. the tiny damper is applied to a lever that keeps it pressed under the string and is moved away from it when the key is pressed. This is the most effective and reliable mechanism devised for the instruments of the time. It is equipped with three pedals: damper lowering, bassoon and harp.
