Erard Paris

1856
Donated by ENRICO GIOVENE

Sébastien Erard (1752-1831) was perhaps the most famous of all harp makers and the greatest innovator in the building of piano actions. His two most important patents were for agraffes (threaded brass or bronze studs with holes through which the strings pass before being wound on the tuning pins) and the double escapement (also called double repetition).

Erard built his first grand piano in Paris in about 1790 and later worked in England. His pianos were greatly appreciated by Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, and Mendelssohn.

The Erard company carried on his work in London and Paris with the aid of Sébastien’s brother Jean-Baptiste and Jean-Baptiste’s son Pierre-Orphée.
