Erard
1837

Sébastien Erard (1752-1831) was perhaps the most famous harp maker and the most important innovator in the construction of piano mechanics. Two are his main patents: the agraffes (threaded brass or bronze pins with holes in them through which the strings pass before being wound into the ankles) and the double escapement (also known as double repetition).
Erard built his first grand piano in Paris around 1790 and later extended his business to England. His pianos were highly appreciated by Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin and Mendelssohn).
The Erard house continued its activities in London and Paris with Sébastien’s brother Jean-Baptiste and the latter’s son Pierre-Orphée.
