Johann Baptist Streicher<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Johann Baptist Streicher (1796-1871) came from a family of pianoforte makers. The head of the family Johann Andreas Stein, the founder of the German school, found worthy followers to continue his work in his sons Johann Heinrich, Nanette and Andr\u00e9, Nanette\u2019s children (she was married to Johann Andreas Streicher) and Andr\u00e9\u2019s children.<\/p>\n

Nanette\u2019s son Johann Baptist Streicher is considered the most influential representative of the German school during the nineteenth century.<\/p>\n

Brahms, who received offers of pianofortes from all the leading piano makers, always preferred a Streicher. The last pianoforte owned by Brahms was a Streicher & Sohn from the same period as the one on display here.<\/p>\n

On the death of Johann Baptist\u2019s son Emil Streicher (1836-1916) the highly successful family business was sold, ending the history of one of the most famous \u2013 and certainly the most numerous \u2013 families of piano makers.<\/p>\n
